Thanks to the digital event for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak held last month, we got a good look at what to expect for the most part. With a new map, new characters, new hunting actions, and of course new monsters, it’s looking like this expansion will definitely be the massive one that they keep reminding us it’ll be. And now, thanks to the Monster Hunter YouTube channel, we get an even closer look at two of the things that were shown off: the Citadel locale and the Garangolm monster. Let’s talk about them.
A Tour of The Citadel
This video gives us a closer look at the new map and some of its areas. The first point they make is how unique the fauna and flora are compared to the other maps, which was something I noticed at the digital event (I’m kinda big on environments and stuff when it comes to games like this), as well as the hard-to-miss castle ruins. As the player travels through the beginning area, a new small monster appears. I’m not sure why but I really like it and want to see more of it as well.
It’s also stated that along with the nature that grew from the ruined area, dangerous species also came about that can “leave their mark in ominous ways.” We see this in the form of strange red markings on some of the ruins. They intentionally leave this up to us to discover, but I feel like it’s gonna play a really big role in the progression of the DLC somehow, and maybe even with the hunts of some species.
Beyond that isn’t much new information about the area; we’re told once again that various landscapes are a part of this map, and we go through those landscapes for a bit. We also get to see how the Citadel looks at night, which is an “alluring and perilous purple aura” glowing all about. And that’s where that ends. I love everything that was shown off here. I still hope that the Citadel isn’t the only new map given to us, but it’s an amazingly beautiful locale with lots of variety and unique aspects nonetheless.
Garangolm Gameplay
This video shows us a bit of what we could expect from hunting a Garangolm. Apparently, it’s a territorial monster, fighting as a means to protect its home. It will rely only on its strength and size to fight until it becomes enraged. At that point, its left arm will become covered in moss, and the right arm will be covered in magma. The video also shows some footage of a new Dual Blades Wirebug Skill in full action, and it looks pretty clean.
As for the monster, it’s wonderful. It’s still my least favorite of the Three Lords design-wise, but Capcom set a really high bar with the combat and moveset on this one. I like how it doesn’t just gain water and fire elements when it’s enraged, but it incorporates those elements pretty uniquely into the way it fights, the main example of that being how it gains a boosted jump when the ground explodes under its magma-covered arm.
And that’s it. Definitely great stuff from Capcom, and I can’t wait for them to show off more at a later date. Maybe we’ll also get an announcement of a demo for the expansion? Maybe? …Please?
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is still set to release on June 30th this year. Let me know what you think of everything that was shown so far, as well as what you’d like to see, in the comments.
