Pokemon Go: How to catch Smeargle
Smeargle is a Pokemon introduced back in the second generation with Pokemon Gold and Silver. It’s an artistic Pokemon with a paintbrush for a tail, and the way you find it is just as creative as the Pokemon is.
To catch it, you’ll need to use the camera on your phone. Make sure you have the game’s AR camera mode turned on and head to your Pokemon collection.
Choose one of your Pokemon to view it in AR mode, then take a few pictures of it. Once you’ve done that, look back at your pictures and there’s a small chance you might see Smeargle poking into one of them. Once you leave AR mode, you’ll get an encounter with Smeargle where you can catch it.
You’ll know if it’s shiny, as it’ll have a sparkly glow and it’ll be a different colour to the standard Smeargle pictured above.
When does shiny Smeargle appear?
If you want to get your hands on shiny Smeargle, you might have to wait a while. It last appeared during the Festival of Colours in March 2023, but it may return in future events so keep a look out for future Smeargle events.
When it does appear, expect it to be a relatively tough catch. Smeargle has a low chance of appearing as a shiny Pokemon.
To add to the difficulty, you only get a limited number of Smeargle appearances per day. If you didn’t find one after 5 captures during the Festival of Colours, you missed your chance. Perhaps it’ll be a little easier in the future, or Niantic may decide to keep the difficulty.
