11 Bit Studios’ well received This War of Mine took in enough revenue to cover the development costs within just two days of going on sale, despite rampant piracy.
Speaking to Eurogamer, senior writer Pawel Miechowski explained that their main objective with This War of Mine was to create a serious gaming experience that gamers will be able to relate too, somewhat bucking the trend where war games are concerned.
Most war-themed games these days are all about combat and world conflict and whilst they do have their place and sometimes enlighten us to the horrors of war, none have really shown it from the perspective of an innocent bystander, a civilian caught in the crossfire just trying to make it through each day.
This War of Mine has received high praise from players and critics alike, not just for the engaging and refreshing gameplay.
Shortly after going on sale via the online Steam store, This War of Mine was posted to numerous piracy websites where users would download the game without paying a penny. Strange thing is, 11 Bit were pretty cool about it, even going as far as to create a profile on the bay of pirates to communicate with the law bending citizens and even offer them free codes to download the game legally. Bizzare, yet at the same time refreshing. You can read that article here.
