Today, Sony silently announced PS3 firmaware 4.31, and it will be completely optional.
Sony states it will “improve overall system stability”, won’t “affect online play and access to apps” and does not signal PSN maintenance.
Firmware update 4.31 comes on the heels of the much more substantial update 4.30, which unified PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita Trophies, as well as began the closure of Life With PlayStation, among other things.
Sony highly recommends downloading the firmware.
