Rocket League has gone from good to great since its release on PS4 as a PS Plus freebie. Seriously, this writer has stuck more hours into it that he cares to remember. Still crap at it, though…
That’s beside the point. What does matter is what the future holds for the beloved footy/car hybrid mash up. Earlier today Psyonix took to the PlayStation blog to reveal some new treats coming in an update to honor the inspiration behind the bonkers multiplayer game. You can find out all the details on that here.
That’s not all though; there’s more. According to the developer, Rocket League may get a Season Pass of sorts, if the demand from players is there for it.
“At first we didn’t, because we don’t like the idea of selling a pass to content that we’re not even sure what it is yet, but now that we’ve had quite a bit of DLC and plan more, we may consider it. We’ll see what the demand for it’s like.”
So if you’re one of the few who likes Season Passes (we despise them on principle) then you should probably make yourself known to Pysonix. A new mode was also announced in the blog post that will start this December on PS4/PC. PS Vita owners will only be able to play Rocket League and the new modes on their Vita via remote play as the developers have stated (again?) that there’s no plan for a PS Vita port. No surprises there, then…
Canadians will be right at home with Hockey Mode, but what’s been bugging us is whether we’ll only be able to play it during the winter months or if it will be a permanent game mode. Again, Psyonix is leaving this one to the fans to decide.
“It will be available starting in December. We’d consider keeping it around permanently or making it seasonal once we see how the folks react (we’ve been going back and forth on which way to go, so we figure that we’ll just see what the people want)”
There’s also a new map/footy pitch coming soon, though it won’t be the traditional type that we’ve been skidding all over for the last few months. Instead it’ll be a “non-traditional” map. Other than that, we know nothing. The developers have stated that we’ll hear more about it this November.
Finally, PC/PS4 cross play. It’s a nice feature, but it’s somewhat limited in its uses. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing anything massive change in that respect any time soon as the developers have said that it’s a “major undertaking” that will need so many different things to work together. It hasn’t been completely ruled out, but for the time being it’s just not happening.
