Rumour: Is This Our First Glimpse At The PS4 Controller?

Sony-logoBig news today guys, after all the rumours and speculation about the upcoming PS4 and what it’s controller will be like, we finally have some solid evidence in the form of a photograph. In the photo posted by Destructoid, we can clearly see a Playstation style controller, though obviously intended for the next generation console, the PS4.

Multiple sources have confirmed that the image is indeed genuine and that it’s an early prototype for developers to use to get to grips with the new hardware.

Check out the image below and see what you think, bearing in mind this is most likely not the final design.

From what we can see the heavily rumoured touch pad is present on the front of the controller, taking up much of the space that would have been occupied by the standard “start” and “select” buttons, whilst the PS button is moved down right between the sticks.

Another apparent change is the sticks, instead of the curved and somewhat annoying to grip analogues we’re used to from the Dualshock design, they seem to have taken a more ergonomic form with indents to keep your thumbs secure, preventing them slipping off, as is often done with the Dualshock sticks.

Also, the controller itself seems to have gained a bit of weight around the grips, not that that’s a bad thing. With a chunkier grip its got to be easier to hold the controller for longer periods of time, something us big handed people will see as a welcome move from Sony.

There’s no images of the back of the controller yet, so we’ve no idea what Sony has done with the triggers, whether they have taken a redesign or remain the same, but all will surely be revealed on the 20th when practically everyone is assuming that Sony will be showing off the PS4 and the controllers, as well as a new PS Vita model.

One last thing, the big blue light on the top. Remember how we told you that the PS4 controller may integrate Playstation Move? Well it looks like that’s what they’re trying to do, though how it will work remains to be seen, again, something that will surely be shown off at the Playstation meeting next week.

So remember to check back with The Games Cabin for updates during and after the Playstation meeting, and in the mean time why not join us on Facebook and never miss out on the latest news, rumours, reviews and even the occasional giveaway, just click here.

What do you think of the new PS4 controller? Bearing in mind it’s probably not going to look exactly like the picture above. Let us know in the comments section below.

  1. Overall, it looks like an improvement to me. I mean, I still have my doubts with that touch pad, but Move control integration is a high point. Now, you don’t have to buy a completely new set of controllers to compliment your old set of controllers. The D-Pad, however is amazing. It looks just like the PS Vita’s and, though I never thought they could improve the D-Pad on their controllers, the Vita’s is amazing. Nice to see it on the big boy console. I don’t understand where people are coming from with finger slippage on the dual shocks analog sticks. I’ve never had that issue, and I’ve had a dual shock since they first came out. Ah, Ape Escape. the first tech demo for new hardware that didn’t disappoint.
