Remember the Star Wars: Battlefront series? Yeah, it seems like they were an age ago. Well, a console generation anyway.
Last year Star Wars: First Assault appeared briefly on the Xbox Live Arcade and gave us a new hope (pun, totally intended) that we may see a true sequel to the series. The title is currently still being developed by LucasArts, but since the company got bought out by Disney last year, we may not see it for a long time to come.
Rumours suggest that Disney wants its newly acquired studios to develop tie-in games to coincide with the release of the next three Star Wars movies, and has apparently led to a delay with Star Wars: 1313.
According to a source close to the project, Star Wars: First Assault was to act as a tool to test the waters, and should it be successful, the company would have gone on to develop the long-awaited Star Wars: Battlefront III. This is all rumour at this point, but with some new screenshots of the game which look pretty good, it’s hard to ignore what could have been, that’s not to say that it will never be…

As a big fan of the Star Wars: Battlefront series, and the Star Wars universe in general, it’s something I’d love to see released. With Disney and their ways though, it may be a long time until we see a new entry in the Battlefront franchise, or even Battlefront III, but instead we could be lumbered with rushed movie tie-ins.
