SMITES creator Hi-Rez Studios has released their mythological themed free-to-play MOBA on the Steam store yesterday. SMITE is one of the most played MOBA’s out there today with a community reaching over 10 million players since it’s release date of March 25, 2014. Before it’s release onto Steam SMITE used its own service to host the game which made for players to download a separate client, but now Steam and SMITE have teamed up in hopes for the MOBA to grow not only in monthly players but also in the diversities of which these players come from.
Todd Harris the co-founder and COO of Hi-Rez Studios said:
“The time is right for SMITE on Steam. The platform has evolved to include more quality free-to-play titles and, most importantly, better ways for users to discover them. Now is the best time yet to see what SMITE is all about, and we’re excited to make it even easier for the more than 125 million active users worldwide who call Steam home to dive in for free.”
This transition from a self-service SMITE to full Steam support provides a zero account migration fee, which means anyone who already has SMITE downloaded and wishes to play through the Steam client can do so by just installing SMITE on Steam and logging into the game through their Hi-Rez account.
For anyone who doesn’t know what SMITE is and is interested in a new free game to play should definitely check it out as SMITE provides a unique feel towards a MOBA. League of Legends and DOTA 2 the two most popular games in the world right now both use an overhead camera, SMITE changes this completely, instead of an overhead camera you observe your god from the third person view. SMITE combines the classic team strategies that all MOBA’s have with a unique perspective of gameplay, this captures the players in the in-depth action and large variety of gods to choose from.
