Introduction
I have been playing League of Legends since its release and I have always found the lore in the game to be fascinating. There are so many stories that you become immersed and begin to feel like your a part of the world the game was created around. Sure the first couple of champions were simply created and the follow up stories have been released like some addition to them, to give them some depth, but as the game progressed and continued to rise in popularity around the world, League of Legends creators saw the opportunity to tell a story for each champion. In doing so they have created the universe that is called Runeterra. These back stories help you connect with your favorite champions on a deeper level and may even influence your choice for your favorite champion as well. I know that it has influenced me for sure.
There are a lot of amazing stories in the League of Legend’s universe that really explain the world of Runeterra to a reader and make them feel much more immersed in the game. But nothing can be perfect, since there are many champions that really have a less than spectacular lore that is in need of drastic improvement. In this list I will point those champions out and hopefully these articles will find their way into Riot Games’ HQ so that they can finally fix these monstrosities.
Disclaimer: When these lists are made there are 159 champions in the game, by the time it is finished there probably will be some new additions to the universe so I will fit them in the current roster at the time of their release.
Previous edition:
143: Poppy
Really just another Yordle lore. They pretty much are terrible. Some less terrible, some more terrible but overall terrible. Poppy is one of those that is less terrible but again, like I said it’s still terrible. Poppy’s lore just speaks that she befriended a guy and then he died. It doesn’t feel impactful and important to the character.
The Best Part Of The Lore
‘’Orlon passed the hammer to Poppy on his deathbed, and with it, his hope of an enduring kingdom. It was only then that Orlon told her the story of his weapon’s creation, and how it was never truly intended for his hands. He explained to Poppy that the hammer was meant to go to the Hero of Demacia–the only one who could keep Demacia whole. As her friend drew his last breath, Poppy swore to him that she would find this hero and place the weapon in his hands.
But what Poppy possesses in resolve, she lacks in ego, as it never even occurred to her that she might be the hero Orlon described.’’
Who said that romance is dead?
The Worst Part Of The Lore
‘’As Poppy watched the camp from the safety of her hiding place, her eyes caught the gleam of armor emerging from a tent. It was the group’s commanding officer, wearing a brigandine of gleaming steel plates, each piece overlapping, each an integral part of the whole. The man’s name was Orlon, and his presence seemed to stir the souls of everyone there. If someone became discouraged, he was there to remind them of why they pressed on. If someone collapsed from exhaustion, he inspired them to get up. It reminded Poppy of certain yordle charms, though again, without magic.
Poppy crept in for a closer look. She found herself following this shining commander, as if drawn to him by fate itself. She observed Orlon as he led his soldiers in training exercises. He was not a large fellow, yet he swung his massive battle hammer with surprising alacrity. At night, Poppy listened intently to his hushed discussions with the elders of the camp. She heard them making plans to pull up stakes and head west to build a permanent settlement.’’
Not poorly written, I just feel that this is Orlon’s lore and Poppy appears as a side character.
142: Rek’Sai
Another short Void lore. I mean they kind of made it a pattern but at least they aren’t short and awful like Yordle ones. These ones are just short and bad.
The Best Part Of The Lore
‘’The largest and fiercest of her species, Rek’Sai is a merciless predator that tunnels through the earth to ambush and devour her prey. Her insatiable hunger has laid waste to entire regions of the once-great Shuriman empire. Merchants, traders and armed caravans will go hundreds of miles out of their way to avoid these vast areas, though cunning bandits have been known to lure the unwary into her killing grounds. Once Rek’Sai detects you, your fate is sealed. There is no hope of escape; she is death from below the sand.’’
Yup, that’s the whole lore. I mean she is a worm or a bug or something so you really can’t expect to have her family tree in here, but I really expected more. I will put in the best part since it is written nicely and has some edge to it, but it has to be ranked this low due to the lacking information about anything.
The Worst Part Of The Lore
The length. She looks badass, surely you could write something about it.
141: Seraphine
Ah, you didn’t expect some newer champion in here, did you? So Seraphine’s lore is just recycled Sona’s lore. It’s a story about a rising pop star. Riot you missed the show, you should have sent her to America’s Got Talent and not League of Legends.
The Best Part Of The Lore
‘’Her hextech crystal had sung an elegy of what hatred left unchecked could accomplish. Seraphine couldn’t let that happen to the cities she loved. Persuading her parents to help, she dismantled her dampener, and together, they gave the crystal a new home in its opposite—a platform that would amplify her gifts, not repress them, allowing her to hear others in all their complexity. Seraphine hoped the crystal’s voice would be among them. She rode this platform down as a stage of sorts, stepping out onto the Entresol between Piltover and Zaun. As the crowds gathered and the lights dazzled, she heard citizens from both worlds, mingled together to hear her.’’
Now, you have to understand one thing. If I put something in the best part of the lore, it doesn’t necessarily mean that its any good. It can also mean that everything else is rubbish and that particular part is at least 1% less rubbish. That’s the case with Seraphine’s lore.
The Worst Part Of The Lore
‘’Over time, Seraphine realized she could sense songs too private, too personal, for any ordinary person to hear. And as she grew, so did the intensity of her gifts. She heard every person’s soul, loving or cruel—turning the streets she’d once loved into an overwhelming cacophony of conflicting desires. How could she make sense of the voices if none of them harmonized? Some days, she hid shivering in a corner, hands over her ears, unable to hear herself above the chaos.’’
140: Gnar
Another Yordle, another story without a point. Gnar has split personality disorder. Also amnesia. No biggie.
The Best Part Of The Lore
‘’But the blow never landed. Gnar felt a chill colder than any winter, one that seemed to turn the air itself into ice—truly, this elemental magic froze him in place, biting through his shaggy fur. Everything, including the monster, became quiet. The yordle’s strength and anger melted away. A deep tiredness crept into his limbs, and he fell softly asleep.
Gnar napped for a long time. When he finally awoke, he shook the frost from his shoulders, breathing heavily. Everyone else was gone. With no monsters to fight and no friends to protect, he felt very small and alone again.
The land was very different, too. There was snow everywhere, blanketing everything as far as his wide eyes could see. Still, he let out a happy yelp when he saw his beloved boomerang lying beside him, and scurried away to find something to hunt.
Even now, Gnar has no grasp of what took place that fateful day, nor how he escaped. He simply marvels at the world before him, with so many oddities to collect and places to explore.’’
The Worst Part Of The Lore
‘’His greatest treasure was the jawbone of a drüvask. When he tugged it from the cold earth, he squealed with glee and flung it as far as he could.
It landed two hops away.
Thrilled by this early success, Gnar carried his “boomerang” wherever he went. The world would try its best to offer him new delights—shiny lint, sweet nectar, round things—but none could match the pure joy he felt in throwing and catching his cherished weapon. He now considered himself a hunter, and trailed herds of wild beasts that paid him no mind.’’
Not too bad, I don’t want to be harsh on a little guy. But not too imaginative as well. Although we are now getting into some mediocre stories and lore so the reviews won’t be as unforgiving as they were up until now.
Conclusion
Another list about The Rankings of League of Legends lores is done.
Like I said, we are now entering a mediocre zone where the lore isn’t so bad. So starting from the next article on the lore and story it will definitely be more interesting!
There is a long way to go guys trust me. We have only just begun, but I would love to hear your opinions on this one. I mean the serial. Do you like it? What would you change? Leave a comment, I would be happy to hear from you!
