When does Elder Scrolls Online take place?
According to the official Elder Scrolls Online site, ESO takes place during the Age of Heroes, 1000 years before the events of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It’s the time of the “Interregnum”, between the end of the Second Empire and the founding of the Third Empire under Tiber Septim.
This period in Elder Scrolls lore is one of “chaotic political change” and conflict between the various locations and provinces in Tamriel. Each province is vying for dominance over the Imperial Throne.
The Second Era is currently the earliest period featured in any Elder Scrolls game.

Where does ESO fit in the series order?
So now we know when ESO takes place, let’s learn how ESO fits into the overall timeline.
ESO rests at the start of the Elder Scrolls franchise chronologically. It takes place in the Second Era, whereas most games in the series take place in the Third Era or Fourth Era.
For example, Elder Scrolls: Arena and Daggerfall take place in the first part of the Third Era. Morrowind and Oblivion take place in the second part of the Third Era. Skyrim takes place in the Fourth Era after the previous four main titles.
Therefore, each main RPG instalment in the series takes place after the last. Elder Scrolls Online, on the other hand, takes place before any of them.
Additionally, the various Elder Scrolls spin-offs like Elder Scrolls: Blades take place after ESO, throughout the Third or Fourth era depending on the title. The only other game to take place in the Second Era is Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard.
We’ve also never had a full First Era game. This could possibly be an area Bethesda explores in a future prequel game, but we’ll have to wait and see. Elder Scrolls VI is still a long way off, and who knows what other spin-offs could be released before it comes out.
