The Wind Temple in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is one of the game’s main dungeons. If you’re not sure how to progress, we’re here to help. This Wind Temple Tears of the Kingdom walkthrough guide will explain how to solve all the puzzles and defeat the boss.
Tears of the Kingdom: Starting the Wind Temple
Before you enter the Wind Temple in Tears of the Kingdom, be sure to grab a couple of things:
- Lots of arrows.
- Cold-resistance gear or a lot of spicy meals – you can buy the gear in Rito Village, or stock up on a ton of Spicy Peppers and cook them if you’re low on rupees.
- A way to make fire – bring Fire Fruit and arrows, fire emitters or wood/flint.
Once you’ve made the long trek up the Wind Temple in Tears of the Kingdom, it’s time to start puzzle-solving. The Wind Temple will be many players’ first temple in the game if you follow the suggested route, but you can tackle the temples in any order.
After interacting with the middle of the ship, you’ll be told to open the hatch in the centre. This is done by turning five gears at various parts of the temple using Tulin’s wind power.
All of their locations will be added to your minimap, but it’s not immediately clear how to actually get to them. Most of them are hidden inside the temple itself and require you to enter through various hidden pathways.
We’ll show you how to find all five gears, solve all the puzzles and eventually defeat the boss, Colgera.
Wind Temple: Gear 1
You can tackle the gears in any way, but we’re starting at the top. Use the central wind to fly up to the northern side of the ship. Way up high you’ll see what looks like a closed hatch on top of the ship.
You can use your Ultrahand to pry the door open, then you can jump in. Be careful to avoid all the lasers on your way down. You may need to use your glider.
Near the bottom of the laser area, you’ll find two inner sections. One has a chest with a weapon inside, while the other has the first gear you need to turn. Use Tulin’s ability to blow wind into the contraption and get the gears turning.
Wind Temple: Gear 2
Go back to the central part of the ship. Head north again, but don’t go up high this time. Instead, look for two levers on either side of the grate looking into the laser tunnel.
One of the levels can be turned with Ultrahand to unlock a room with a chest. The other one is more important, as it leads to the gear. However, this lever is broken.
Pick up a nearby icicle with Ultrahand and attach it to the lever. You can then turn this lever normally to unlock a new room. Once inside, use Tulin to blow wind into the second gear.
Wind Temple: Gear 3
Another gear is waiting for you on the underside of the ship. Simply glide off the edge of it and head below the ship and you’ll see a platform where you can land. The gear is just on the inside there.
Be sure not to confuse this area with the next one – there are multiple ways to access lower parts of the ship by gliding, but only one platform has this gear. Use Tulin’s ability again to blow a gust into the gear.
Wind Temple: Gear 4
For the next gear, we’re jumping off the east side of the ship. Avoid the big cannon on the side, and look for an entrance covered by icicles. You can glide into this area without having to break all the icicles, but it might help to shoot them with fire arrows.
Inside is a room with a chest trapped inside. You can reach this by connecting the icicles together with Ultrahand, then send your new icicle stick through the hole to attach to the chest.
Move on from the chest room and you’ll come across some wheels. You can use Rewind on them to cross to the other side.
A little further on you’ll see some turning gears, and right beside them is another group of gears, but these ones aren’t moving.
The goal is to connect the moving gears to the stationary ones with another icicle. Attach it to the moving gears first, then to the second set.
This will get the other gears turning, allowing you to enter the next room and activate the fourth gear with Tulin.
Wind Temple: Gear 5
The final gear is accessed from the bottom platform on the underside of the ship. Go there and head up the stairs to reach a hallway with lasers in it. There’s a chest at the end of those lasers you can grab, just don’t walk into them.
At the other end of the hallway is a gap you can cross with Tulin’s wind. Once you cross, there’s a lever you can turn with Ultrahand to open a door to outside.
But more importantly, there’s some fallen stone in the next room and a large opening in the ceiling. Use your Ascend ability to go up through what remains of the ceiling.
There’s a chest hidden right next to that room which you can grab by moving the stone. Open it and keep walking until you find a gear and a closed door.
This gear isn’t moving, so you need to find a way to get it going. Thankfully, there are some helpful stone slabs you can use.
How to power the gear
Connect one of the stone slabs to create a makeshift windmill and use Tulin’s wind to power it. Alternatively, you can attach a rocket to the slab and use that instead – Tears of the Kingdom has a lot of alternative solutions to puzzles!
Climb the ladder and use Tulin’s wind to activate the final gear, then head back to the start of the temple. It’s boss fight time.
Wind Temple boss: Colgera
And so we arrive at the boss of the Wind Temple in Tears of the Kingdom. Colgera is an intimidating beast, but defeating it is actually quite simple – if you have a lot of arrows to spare.
This boss fight takes place in the air, and your goal is to hit the underside of Colgera’s circular segments, which are covered in ice. It takes three regular arrows to break one, two to break the ice, and one to pierce Colgera’s weak point hidden within.
When you shoot an arrow in mid-air, time slows down to let you aim your shot. This is crucial to your success in this boss fight. When Colgera passes by, aim your bow and shoot it. You may need to adjust your angle if you’re not close enough but don’t worry about running out of stamina as it will regenerate quickly.
How to beat Colgera at the Wind Temple in Tears of the Kingdom
One strategy is to fuse your arrows with Aerocuda wings to get more accurate arrows. You can also use Keese Eyeballs or Aerocuda Eyeballs to create homing arrows.
Colgera will attack you by charging at you, and sometimes it will summon a portal. When it does this, it means it’s going to attack you from below. Tulin will give you a warning, and you can use his gust to dodge Colgera’s attacks.
Once you’ve broken all three of Colgera’s weak points, the second phase will begin. In phase 2, Colgera will start summoning tornados. Use Tulin’s gust to avoid them.
Break all three weak points again and the fight will be over. You’ll be rewarded with a Heart Container and a special cutscene. You’ll also be able to use Tulin’s ability anywhere on the map!
