How To Start Mining: New World Mining Guide
To start mining in New World, you will need to make a mining pick. You can craft a flint mining pick right away at any campfire or in any settlement. If you are wondering how to craft a flint pickaxe, you require the same materials as your do for a flint sickle, used for harvesting:
- 1 Flint
- 1 Green Wood
As we mention in our Complete New World Harvesting guide, the same goes for here. You can find flint lying around pretty much anywhere. Just look where you are running and you will see what look like rocks, usually with a bit of brown/beige color to them. For green wood, you can simply gather any bushes you see around you. Alternatively, if you have already made a Logging Axe for Logging, then you can chop young trees to obtain the Green Wood.
The screenshot below shows a boulder beside several flint. If you see rocks like this laying around, be sure to pick up a few for your crafts. After you gather your flint and green wood, head over to a campfire or a settlement and craft a flint mining pick axe.
How To Make Mining Faster
If you have already read our other gathering guides, this section will also be very familiar to you. If you have already read this section in our other guides, simply check out the materials list below, as all other steps and explanations are the same.
Territory Standing Reputation
The first option to make mining faster, or to make any gathering skill faster, is to choose this option when you rank up in reputation for a region. When you gain Territory Standing in a region, you are allowed to choose 1 of 3 upgrades, which differ each time. Sometimes you will have the option to “Increase Gathering Speed by 3.0%” while in the region. If you chose this, you can begin to stack these to significantly increase your gathering speed while in that region.
Upgrade Your Gathering Tools
Using a flint mining pick will only get you 100% harvesting speed. Sure, 100% sounds like a lot, but this speed is actually pretty slow. If you have some other gathering skills leveled already or some gold to spend at a trading post, you can craft an iron mining pickaxe pretty much right away as well. Crafting an iron mining pick axe will increase your harvesting speed to 125%-139% depending on the attributes you get.
For how to craft an iron pick axe, head to a work bench inside a settlement and use your engineering skill to craft one. The ingredients you will need are:
- 2 of Any type of leather
- 3 of Any type of timber / refined wood
- 12 Iron Ingots
Where To Get The Materials
You can obtain the leather from skinning animals. For this, you will need to have a flint skinning knife at the very least. You will kill and skin an animal, then take their hide to the tannery in town to turn it into leather. Alternatively, you can buy 1 leather from the Trading Post in town, they should be very cheap.
The same goes for 2 pieces of timber. You will need to take Green Wood into town and cut it into timber. Alternatively, go to the trading post and purchase 2 timber if you are looking for a quick turnaround and do not have the materials yet.
For iron ingots, you can find Iron Veins and use your mining skills to extract iron ore. Again, you will need a mining pick for this. You can go out and find these veins, mine the ore, then smelt them in town to create iron ingots. Of course, if they are affordable you may choose to buy them off the trading post if you do not already have these materials. Iron veins can be hard to come by unless you are specifically looking for them.
Once you have gathered the required materials, you can craft the iron mining pick in New World and your mining speed will be significantly faster! Scroll further down our New World Mining Guide to see where you can gather each type of material.
How To Obtain Each Tier of Upgraded Mining Pick Axe
The efficiency you gain when crafting your first iron mining pick does not stop there. There are 5 tiers of mining pick axes that you can utilize and upgrade to. Each tier will increase your mining speed, but higher tier picks are not fully required to mine higher level veins.
An important note to the base gathering speed listed below is that these are the base speeds. You can sometimes roll better speeds if you are lucky or use additional items/azoth which we will cover later in the New World Mining Guide.
Tier | Pickaxe Name | Base Gather Speed | Craft Requirements |
1 | Flint Mining Pickaxe | 100% | 1x Flint 1x Green Wood |
2 | Iron Mining Pickaxe | 125% | 12x Iron Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |
3 | Steel Mining Pickaxe | 250% | 13x Steel Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |
4 | Starmetal Mining Pickaxe | 400% | 14x Starmetal Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |
5 | Orichalcum Mining Pickaxe | 625% | 15x Orichalcum Ingot 3x Timber 2x Coarse Leather |

How Luck Affects Rare Mining Items in New World
Specifically for rare items that are obtainable in mining, depending on their Tier you will need a different amount of mining luck to have them appear on the potential loot table.
- Tier 2 & 3: 1,000 Mining Luck Required
- Tier 4: 1,450 Mining Luck Required
- Tier 5: 1,800 Mining Luck Required
This means that for even a chance at obtaining Tier 2 or 3 items from mining, you must currently have 1,000 mining luck while mining a node. This 1,000 translates to 1%. Any time you have mining luck, you can divide it by 1,000 to get the percentage probability that you can get that item.
Similarly, this means that in order to obtain a Tier 5 rare resource from mining, you will need a minimum of 1,800 mining luck for it to have a chance to drop. If you have exactly 1,800 mining luck, you will have a 1.8% chance to get any of the rare items, since you are above the minimum threshold for Tier 2, 3, 4, and 5. If you have 2,500 mining luck points, your chance will be 2.5%, and so on.
We strongly encourage you to check out our article explaining luck in New World. It covers how luck works, how you can gain luck through leveling your gathering professions, and all the other sources to give luck such as cooked food, equipment sets, trophies, and more.
How To Get Better Items and Rare Drops: New World Mining Guide
Food Buffs To Increase Luck for Mining in New World
Cooking food is one of the ways to improve your chances at rare items while mining in New World. When you have added mining luck, you have chances to obtain items such as Fae Iron from iron veins for example. The below table shows all food buffs that currently affect mining luck. Be sure to level up your cooking skill early to make the most of your mining runs!
To understand better how the “luck rating” system works with the overall chances, check out this post, it explains how the RNG works exceptionally well.
Tier | Food Name | Image | Increase on Luck Rating | Duration | Level Req. | Ingredients Needed |
1 | Roasted Potatoes | 1,000 | 20 Mins | 0 | 1x Peppercorn 1x Butter 1x Potato
2 | Herb-Roasted Potatoes | 1,400 | 25 Mins | 5 | 1x Cinnamon 1x Butter 1x Honey 1x Potato
3 | Boiled Potatoes | 1,700 | 30 Mins | 20 | 1x Cauliflower 1x Butter 1x Seasoning Blend 1x Water 1x Potato
4 | Poultry with Roasted Potatoes | 1,900 | 35 Mins | 40 | 1x Butter 1x Sausage 1x Nut 1x Seasoning Blend 1x Poultry 1x Potato
5 | Salted Roasted Potatoes | 2,000 | 40 Mins | 60 | 1x Oregano 1x Parsley 1x Butter 1x Salt 1x Nut 1x Squash 1x Potato |
Charms to Increase Mining Luck, Yield, or Experience
When crafting a mining pickaxe, use a Miner’s Charm to increase the chance of more rare drops from mining, more mining experience, or higher yield when mining. These charms are typically acquired from killing mobs or looting chests. Higher Gear Score will land higher percentages. There are currently three miner’s charms in the game:
- Steel Miner’s Charm (3%-9.4% More Mining Experience)
- Starmetal Miner’s Charm (2%-9.3% Increased Chance at Finding Rare Items)
- Orichalcum Miner’s Charm (10%-19% Increased Yield from Mining)
Using these charms when crafting will give you the Miner’s Luck perk to your pickaxe. The Miner’s Luck perk does not affect Equipment and Item drops, it only affects the drop rate of the Rare Resources associated with the resource being gathered. These rare resources will be discussed in the next section of the Complete New World Mining Guide.
You can get the Miner’s Luck perk on your mining pick, your amulet, and also your armor to stack these chances. You can also randomly gain this perk when crafting, if you are lucky!
How To Hold More Weight In New World
In addition to food buffs that you can used while Mining for extra luck, you may find yourself getting full bags and becoming encumbered. Being encumbered means you will walk instead of run, and you will not be able to recall to an inn or fast travel. This can be quite a set back when trying to make a big haul of mining ore before you head back to town.
Luckily, there are currently 3 encumbrance potions you can chug to increase your encumbrance amount for a period of time. This may be just enough to farm more and recall with all your goodies. Unfortunately we do not have the data quite yet on exactly how much encumbrance limit is increased per potion, but will update this table when the data is available.
Tier | Potion Name | Encumbrance Limit Increase | Duration | Level Req. |
3 | Strong Encumbrance Potion | +50 Weight Limit | 120 secs | 20 |
4 | Powerful Encumbrance Potion | +75 Weight Limit | 150 secs | 40 |
5 | Infused Encumbrance Potion | +100 Weight Limit | 180 secs | 60 |
How To Increase Yield to Get More Materials From Mining
Add Perks to Raise Yield from Mining
When you are crafting any of your mining picks, they all have chances to add a perk. A perk will give your mining pick a special attribute that may increase different aspects of the item.
You can add either a special item to your craft, or you can also add Azoth when crafting to increase the chance of getting a perk. Some of these perks increase the amount of items, or the yield, you can get from mining. To increase the yield and get more ore out of mining, you will want the “Mining Yield” Perk on your mining pick which makes it yield 10% more resources.
You can also add perks to armor and amulets, as discussed in the next section. Utilizing as many of these as you can in your gear set will maximize yield.
Consume Proficiency Potions to Raise Yield of all Gathering Skills Temporarily
Another way to raise yield temporarily while on a mining run is to craft and consume Proficiency Booster potions. Some people think since this is a potion it must be crafted using the Arcana skill, but it is actually crafted using the Engineering skill, using a Workshop.
Here are all the current proficiency potions available in New World:
Tier | Potion Name | Image | Increase in Yield | Duration | Level Req. | Ingredients |
2 | Weak Proficiency Booster | 5% | 10 Mins | 5 | 1x Water 1x Soul Mote 1x Air Mote
3 | Common Proficiency Booster | 7% | 15 Mins | 20 | 1x Water 1x Soul Wisp 1x Air Wisp
4 | Strong Proficiency Booster | 10% | 20 Mins | 40 | 1x Water 1x Soul Essence 1x Air Essence
5 | Powerful Proficiency Booster | 15% | 30 Mins | 60 | 1x Soul Quintessence 1x Air Quintessence |
What Mining Perks Give Luck? Experience? Higher Yield?
The following table is a list of all the currently available perks you can add to your mining pick axe when crafting. Keep this in mind if you are looking to increase your yield, make mining faster, or have better chances at finding rare items while mining.
As you will read in the description, each of these perks scales depending on the gear score it is applied to. The higher the gear score, the better your perk!
Perk | Slot | Description |
Mining Luck | Mining Pick | While Mining gain 2.0%-9.3% chance at finding rare items. |
Mining Yield | Mining Pick | Mining yields 10.0%-19.0% more resources. |

All Mining Trophies in New World to Increase Mining Luck
There are 3 trophies to increase Mining Luck that you can make to store in your house, if you own one yet. You can craft these using the Furnishing skill. These trophies significantly increase your Mining luck and therefore your chances at finding rare items while mining. Here is a breakdown of all Mining trophies in New World.

Where to Find Veins and Ore – New World Mining Guide
Where to Find Boulders and Stone
When you first start your mining journey, you can start with mining small boulders. As you level up your skill, you will be able to mine larger and larger boulders. Boulders only produce stone, but this can be a valuable place to start. You can use the stone you gather from boulders to crush into Stone Blocks using the stonecutting skill at any settlement. This will help increase your stonecutting skill which will give you a lot of XP as well as prepare you to cut gems later down the road.
Boulders can be picked up pretty much anywhere in the game, especially in the starting areas. We won’t post a map for these specifically as you should be able to come across them virtually everywhere.
Where to Find Iron Veins & Ore in New World
As Iron Ore is gatherable right away with 0 mining skill, this is going to be the first ore you collect other than plain stones. Iron ore is usable for many crafts and a key ingredient to level up any type of armorsmithing or weaponsmithing.
Iron veins are very abundant around New World, but with so many people needing them early on in the game, sometimes they are hard to come by unless you know exactly where to look. Be sure to utilize the Interactive New World Map to search for new places that might be currently around your character for some quick hits.
The Games Cabin’s favorite places to mine Iron Ore so far are shown below:
Best Iron Ore Location – Everfall
We spent a lot of time in Everfall and basically made it our main hub during our journey in New World. There are some great opportunities around Everfall Town that are quick to get to and can yield some nice, quick trips to stock up until you are max weight, then head back to town in record time:
2nd Best Iron Ore Location – First Light
First Light also has some heavily dense areas on the west side of the region where the rocky terrain is. Try these routes close by the fast travel shrine for quick access and return to town:
Iron Ore Locations – Monarch’s Bluffs
Monarch’s Bluffs is quite a large region and for that reason, its not our favorite place to gather resources. However, if you find yourself in the region and are looking for the more dense areas of Iron Ore, check these routes:
Iron Ore Locations – Windsward
Windsward also has some concentrations of Iron Ore, mostly around the edges of the region. Here are 3 areas you can target if you find yourself looking for ore while in Windsward:
Iron Ore Locations – Other Regions
Iron ore does exist in most of the other regions in the game, however it is not nearly as popular are the regions we have shared. Of course, if you’d like to see where else you can find these locations, be sure to check out the Interactive World Map.
Where to Find Silver Veins & Ore in New World
Silver is a bit harder to come by than Iron. Luckily, great places for silver can be found close to Iron Ore hangouts. Our favorite spot coincidentally, is Everfall again.
As Silver is gatherable once you hit mining skill 10, which will be very quickly. For this reason, it almost makes sense to just mine boulders close by a settlement until you hit level 10, before you venture off looking for Iron and Silver. Many of the hotspots for Iron also happen to be great spots to get silver as well.
Silver ore is a key ingredient to level up jewelcrafting, so it is valuable to be able to make amulets, rings, and necklaces.
When you mine a silver vein, you can also obtain any of the Tier 1 or Tier 2 raw gemstones, which we will link to one our Jewelcrafting guide is complete. Make sure you read the section on how to increase gemstone drop chance to mine more efficiently.
The Games Cabin’s favorite places to mine Silver Ore so far are shown below:
Best Silver Ore Location – Everfall
You guessed it, Everfall made the list again. What is perfect about the targeted areas are they are so close to an abundant supply of Iron Ore as well. The spot to the northwest happens to be the most densely populated small area of Silver, and the spot just east of Everfall Town lines up nicely with one of our favorite Iron Ore spots just outside a wolf den. Remember, you can go into wolf dens and pick up some Saltpeter while you are there too!
Silver Ore Locations – Cutlass Keys
Second up, for early level zones, Cutlass Keys has a decent concentration of silver ore to the north east of the region. The reason this beats out other early-game options is the nodes are so close to the Cutlass Keys Town. This means you can stop in town, empty your bags, go on a Silver hunt, and be back to town in no time.
Silver Ore Locations – Weaver’s Fen
Our next favorite spot is for mid-level players who are able to venture into Weaver’s Fen. The challenge with this one, is it is not very close to any towns or fast travel shrines. This reason may mean that you will find a lot less competition farming it, so it can definitely be a good backup plan.
Silver Ore Locations – Other Regions
Silver is also quite abundant in Monarch’s Bluffs, First Light, and Windsward. It will appear in some higher level areas as well, but much less frequent. To see more locations if you would rather look for it elsewhere, use the Interactive New World Map.
Where to Find Seeping Stone (Oil) in New World
Best Seeping Stone (Oil) Location – Weaver’s Fen
By far, the best place to find Seeping Stone to extract Oil, is in Weaver’s Fen. There is an insane amount of this all over just south of Weaver’s Fen Town. If you make your way here, you can’t go wrong.
Seeping Stone (Oil) Locations – First Light
Our second choice for Oil, or first choice if you are still a low level and just starting out, is First Light. The northwestern area of the region has plenty of spawns for Seeping Stone, and there is also a fast travel shrine nearby.
Seeping Stone (Oil) Locations – Other Regions
Seeping Stone also shows up in other regions for a source of oil. We’ve listed our two favorite. The next options you have are Cutlass Keys, Monarch’s Bluffs, Ebonscale Reach, and a few spawns in the Great Cleave. As always, find these on the Interactive New World Map that we used to help in this guide.
Where to Find Gold Veins & Ore in New World
Gold is much harder to come by, even comparatively with the other higher level resources. Here are some of our choices for the best Gold Ore farming areas.
Best Gold Ore Location – Reekwater / Weaver’s Fen Border
At the Northern border of Reekwater, where Reekwater and Weave’s Fen meet, you will find the most abundant, easily travelable area for gold ore farming. You can either trek up from Reekwater Town, or you can use the fast travel shrine to get there much quicker, if you have some spare Azoth.
2nd Best Gold Ore Location – Great Cleave
The Great Cleave also has an amazing density of Gold Veins just east of this fast travel shrine. This will be harder to get to for newer players as this is a higher level zone.
Gold Ore Locations – Cutlass Keys
If you are looking to answer where to find gold ore at lower levels, Cutlass Keys is a safe bet. On the northeaster rocky ridges, you will find a nice lineup of Gold Veins.
Gold Ore Locations – Brightwater
The final gold ore location we show is Brightwood. There are 2 locations with fast travel shrines near by. The northern location is easy to travel to from Brightwood Town as well.
Where to Find Starmetal Veins & Ore in New World
Starmetal Ore is the tier 4 ore that can be used in some crafting recipes. This resource is tier 4 and is very valuable to farm, whether you are selling it on the trading posts or for yourself. You will need mining skill level 100 to mine Starmetal Veins. We are here to show you all of the best places where to find Starmetal in New World. We will go over exact map locations of spawns to give you the best farming routes.
Starmetal ore primarily is used to forge Starmetal Ingots by combining it with Steel Ingots, Flux, and Charcoal. Starmetal Ingots can be smelted skill 150 to be used in many weaponsmithing, engineering, some arcana recipes, and even furnishing skills.
Key Starmetal Recipes in New World
You can turn Starmetal Ore into Starmetal Ingots, which are used for many Tier 4 crafting recipts.
- Starmetal Ingot – 2x Charcoal, 1x Flux, 2x Steel Ingot, 6x Starmetal Ore
How Much XP Does Starmetal Mining Give?
- Small Starmetal Vein – 263 Mining XP with a 70 second base gather time
- Large Starmetal Vein – 591 Mining XP with a 120 second base gather time
How Often Do Starmetal Nodes Respawn?
Current data suggests these are the respawn intervals for each size:
- Small Starmetal Vein – 12 to 18 minutes respawn time
- Large Starmetal Vein – 17 to 26 minutes respawn time
Best Starmetal Location – Great Cleave
Our favorite Starmetal farming locations are in Great Cleave. They are almost directly beside, to the west of the fast travel shrine. Follow this route and you will be sure find many Starmetal Veins.
Starmetal Locations – Cutlass Keys
Our pick for the best low level zone for Starmetal would be Cutlass Keys. Very close, just south of Cutlass Keys Town there are two small hubs of Starmetal Veins. These should be easy prey to get through if you’d rather stay out of the higher level zones.
Starmetal Locations – Brightwood
Brightwood is another option for Starmetal, as there are several areas within close walking distance from Brightwood Town. You really can hit up any of these and should find some available Starmetal veins.
Starmetal Locations – Mourningdale
Mourningdale is basically the same reasoning as we had for Brightwood. There are again several options all around and close to Mourningdale Town. This can also be a good area for a quick run for Starmetal.
Where to Find Lodestone Ore in New World
Lodestone veins produce Lodestone, which is another tier 4 resource. They can also drop a Shard of Adamant, which is a resource usable in perks. This will require 105 mining to gather, and these are unlike other ore resources as they do not drop rare gemstones. Although most lodestone veins are located in the northern regions of the country, there are some spawns elsewhere that we will explore.
You can find lodestones in three sizes. Each size gives you a different amount XP and drops varying amounts of lodestone.
How Much XP Does Lodestone Mining Give?
- Small Lodestones – 105 Mining XP with a 45 second base gather time
- Medium Lodestones – 158 Mining XP with a 70 second base gather time
- Large Lodestones – 237 Mining XP with a 95 second base gather time
How Often Do Lodestone Nodes Respawn?
Current data suggests these are the respawn intervals for each size:
- Small Lodestones – 12 to 18 minutes respawn time
- Medium Lodestones – 15 to 23 minutes respawn time
- Large Lodestones – 17 to 26 minutes respawn time
Great Cleave – Best Lodestone Location
The Great Cleave has a “great” spot for Lodestone Ore. Head just northeast of the fast travel shrine to see a dense population of lodestone.
Brightwood – 2nd Best Lodestone Location
Brightwood also is a great source of Lodestone, on par with the Great Cleave locations. There are several just west of Brightwood Town, so they are easily farmable and you can head to town shortly after. If you head further west, all around a fast travel shrine there are also many more spawns of Lodestone.
Cutlass Keys – Lodestone Locations
Cutlass Keys is a great option if you want to farm Lodestone in New World at a low level zone. If you are low level but already have high mining skill, or if you just don’t want to be bothered by higher level mobs, check out Cutlass Keys. Head south from Cutlass Keys town and follow the path shown.
Weaver’s Fen – Lodestone Locations
Weaver’s Fen is another location that is decent for Lodestone Ore. Just northeast of Weaver’s Fen Town if a circle of Lodestone spawns that is quite tightly spread. Be sure to check out this if you are passing by the area for some quick hits.
Where to Find Platinum Veins & Ore in New World
Platinum is used to smelt Platinum Ingots. In turn, Platinum Ingots are used for many weaponsmithing and jewelcrafting recipes, as well are in engineering and arcana. Platinum is a tier 4 resource and therefore a valuable resource to gather while exploring New World.
How Much XP Does Platinum Mining Give?
- Small Platinum – 263 Mining XP with a 85 second base gather time
- Medium Platinum – 394 Mining XP with a 110 second base gather time
- Large Platinum – 591 Mining XP with a 135 second base gather time
How Often Do Platinum Nodes Respawn?
Current data suggests these are the respawn intervals for each size:
- Small Platinum – 41 to 59 minutes respawn time
- Medium Platinum – 44 to 64 minutes respawn time

Reekwater – Best Platinum Location
The best region to farm Platinum Ore is Reekwater. There are two concentrations, both to the east of Reekwater Town. These farming spots are close together, close to the town, and have a large amount of spawnable nodes. This is a great combination for a quick run that is close to town.
Shattered Mountain – 2nd Best Platinum Location
The second best location is new the fast travel shrine in Shattered Mountain. This is a heavily populated Platinum area that can be farmed if you spend a little Azoth and use the fast travel spirit shrine.
Ebonscale Reach – Platinum Locations
Ebonscale Reach has two good options for Platinum Ore. There are a few nodes just west of Ebonscale Reach Town, as well as another, more densely populated area to the south. The south spot is very nice to farm at, but takes a bit longer to travel to than many of our other suggestions.
Great Cleave – Platinum Locations
There is a fast travel shrine in the middle of Great Cleave that has an abundance of Platinum Veins directly to the east. Pick these up if you are in the area.
Edengrove – Platinum Locations
Finally, in Edengrove there are more spawn locations for Platinum that are a big harder to get to. These may be less populated with players and therefore possibly easier to grab.
