Since Disney got their hands on the Star Wars franchise they’ve been cooking up all sorts of ways to make some cold, hard cash from the popular name.
So far we’ve got a new trilogy of films to look forward to as well as a ten-year spell of EA Star Wars games in the works starting with Star Wars: Battlefront.
Then there’s Disney Infinity 3.0 featuring characters from the Star Wars saga. The latest industry trend is to sell you a game and then sell you bits of a game in the form of expensive plastic toys, something that has worked out quite well for Activision and their Skylanders titles as well as Nintendo’s Amiibo’s, though the former are experiencing a bit of a backlash when it comes to availability.
Disney launched their own toy-based game back in 2013 with additional content coming from their huge catalogue of popular characters.
Disney Infinity 3.0 will bring some of the best-known characters from the Star Wars series in the form of playable characters and add-on figurines.
There are however a few things missing that fans of the Star Wars universe will surely miss: vehicles.
While the game will allow players to pilot vehicles like the iconic Millenium Falcon and the X-Wing, there won’t be any collectible figures to splash the cash on.
A few of the lads from Avalanche Studios let Game Informer have a poke around behind the scenes. Some of the team answered some questions and explained why we won’t be rushing to ASDA for a Millenium Falcon figurine.
So many people are gonna want a Millennium Falcon and so many people are gonna want an X-Wing, they look so great in the game.
I’m afraid they’re out of luck. we talked alot about that. Those space ships… I mean they’re characters. the problem was that if we introduced the vehicles like that it needed to be something sustainable as a [product] line.
We really wanted to do it, but we just couldn’t make it make sense.
It’s a bit of a shame, but in the long run your wallet will thank you. Heck, maybe you could use that money to buy a real game?
Disney Infinity 3.0 and the Star Wars starter sets will be releasing on the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, Android and iOS platforms.
