Whenever you see this game’s impressive world, one question will likely revolve around your head: is Ravenbound an MMO? Sprawling around an open world such as this with your friends sounds amazing, but many RPGs are single-player only. Does Ravenbound join that list?
Is Ravenbound an MMO: Are there multiplayer missions?
Ravenbound is a blend of a rogue-lite mixed with an open world to explore. The studio Systemic Reaction is actually a part of Avalanche Studios, which has made titles like the Just Cause series and the Mad Max game adaptation.
Unfortunately, this rogue-lite will not be multiplayer in any form. So the answer to the question, “Is Ravenbound an MMO?” is a no. Currently, the Steam page for the game only lists “Single Player” under its tags. There is no mention of multiplayer anywhere.
After looking at the official website and social media pages of Systemic Reaction, there are currently no plans to bring an MMO/multiplayer experience to Ravenbound. If the game gets popular, perhaps modders can add it in down the line like what some plan for Hogwarts Legacy.
Other RPGs with co-op
If you want to dive into an illustrious adventure with your friends, there are a few RPGs that will settle your needs.
The most prominent that comes to mind are Monster Hunter Rise and Wild Hearts. In these titles, you’re venturing off into a dense environment and taking on monsters of great size. You’ll have to learn how to avoid each enemy’s attacks and craft weapons and armour to improve your characters. The gameplay loop of gaining materials from defeated monsters and then seeing your warrior adorn powerful armour is incredibly satisfying.
If you’re looking for more fantasy co-op experiences, another game to check out is the Divinity: Original Sin series. Taking on more of a strategic RPG approach rather than an action RPG, the game has received praise across the board for its gameplay mechanics and grand D&D-inspired storytelling. Some even play Dungeons & Dragons, thanks to the game’s tools.
Elden Ring isn’t as consistent with its co-op functionality, but you can also match up in this game. There are grand bosses and dungeons to overcome with your friends, but the process isn’t as streamlined as the other suggestions.
The answer to the question “Is Ravenbound an MMO” is no, but thankfully, there are a bunch of other options for those who want to squad up in fantasy settings.
